Original Lamp Shade Making Techniques

Do not throw away your old lamp shades. I needed new lamp shades desperately. Mine were old, stained, and ugly. I debated about buying new ones, but I needed so many and they are so expensive for decent looking shades. I had a lot of old and new woman’s nylon panty hose. They were given to me by my mother and mother-in-law. I thought i would eventual wear them all, but that never happened. One recent evening , I gathered them together to look them over and decide if i wanted to keep them or not. For some reason unknown to me, my eyes gazed over to my lamp shades and then back over to all the panty hose. An idea came to me, so silly, but I just had to give it a try. I slipped the panty part of the panty hose over the lamp shade, pulling slightly under the lamp shade for it to hold on then held the leg part up ward and cut off the excess panty part, leaving about a half inch to an inch higher then the top of the shade. I took one of the legs, wrapped it at the top, tight enough so that the panty part couldn’t slip back down the shade. Tie it off with a knot and cut off just enough excess to look like a bow. Pull the top up a little and push it into the leg so it looks neat.i could hardly believe how pretty and new it looked. It was absolutely beautiful and then tan color over my old white shade gave the shade a soft new hue. Needless to say my imagination started going wild even though it was so late at night. On the next old lamp shade, I wrapped the panty hose legs from top to bottom Tieing it off at the bottom. I alternated the different color tans and slid the knot part up inside of the shade. I skipped spaces leaving some original white shade showing . Spread out the legs at the top of the shade, making them touch each other or overlapped just a little. At the bottom, pinch each hose leg on that medium shade to finish it. Well another fabulous shade, I couldn’t believe how easy, fun, and no sewing at all project it was. In my room I have smaller night stand lamps, they were also worn out looking. For those shades, I just slipped a hose leg over the shade, I used another hose leg to tie around the bottom, and another around the top. Cut off the excess after knotting them and have just enough to hang like a bow. All my lamp shades got done that night. all of them looked different and new again . Try it, you’ll love it .
