Bank Creditor Insurance vs. Independent Corporate Life Insurance

Before accepting or renewing bank-provided loan or mortgage protection, compare the contractual terms of lender group coverage against an independently owned corporate policy:

Evaluation Point
Bank Creditor Insurance
Independent Corporate Policy
Named Beneficiary
The Lending Bank / Financial Institution
The Corporation, Business Partners, or Designated Heirs
Coverage Amount
Declining Benefit (Coverage decreases as debt balance is paid down)
Level Coverage (Full face value remains 100% guaranteed for the term)
Premium Schedule
Fixed or Increasing (Paying same/higher rates for declining coverage)
Contractually Fixed (Guaranteed level premiums for multi-year duration)
Underwriting Timing
Post-Claim Underwriting Medical vetting occurs after a claim is submitted, risking payout disputes.
Upfront Underwriting Medical assessment completed before policy issuance, ensuring binding protection.
Policy Portability
Bank-Owned (Terminates automatically if refinancing or switching lenders)
Corporation-Owned (Follows your business across any lender or banking transition)
Corporate Tax Value
Zero tax advantage; proceeds simply extinguish bank balance
Proceeds (less ACB) flow through the Capital Dividend Account (CDA) tax-free

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions regarding corporate coverage, CRA tax guidelines, and multi-carrier underwriting in Alberta.

Are life insurance premiums tax deductible for an incorporated business in Canada?

Under standard Canada Revenue Agency rules, life insurance premiums are generally not tax deductible when the corporation is the named beneficiary. However, under paragraph 20(1)(e.2) of the Income Tax Act, a portion of the premium representing the net cost of pure insurance may be deductible if a commercial lender explicitly mandates the policy as collateral for a business loan. In all cases, corporately owned policies allow death benefits (less ACB) to flow through the Capital Dividend Account (CDA) completely tax free to surviving shareholders.

How does life insurance reduce taxes on retained earnings inside a CCPC?

Passive investment income earned inside an incorporated Canadian business is taxed at punitive rates exceeding 50%. By allocating surplus retained earnings into an exempt permanent life policy, cash values accumulate on an annual tax sheltered basis. Upon the death of the insured, proceeds bypass corporate income tax and flow out through the Capital Dividend Account as a tax free dividend to surviving shareholders.

Can I replace an existing bank mortgage or loan insurance policy?

Yes. However, you must never cancel existing coverage until your independent, corporately owned policy has been approved, underwritten, and formally issued. Once your new policy is active, the bank policy can be canceled immediately. Your independent policy delivers guaranteed level coverage, names your chosen beneficiaries, and stays in place if you refinance or switch lenders.

Why do you work exclusively with incorporated businesses?

Our specialized tax planning, shareholder buy sell agreements, and Capital Dividend Account (CDA) strategies are legal structures created specifically for Canadian Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs) and incorporated commercial entities. We do not service unincorporated sole proprietors.

In which provinces do you provide life insurance services?

Victor Connel is licensed to advise and bind life, critical illness, disability, and group benefits across Alberta and Ontario. Corporate debt relief and payroll optimization services through Victor Corporate Services are provided to incorporated businesses across all Canadian provinces.
